From Loyola to Zumarraga

Day 1 the Pilgrimage began with mass in the Ignatius house chapel (where he had his conversion experience during his recuperation from his battle wounds.)

I was touched by mass celebrant Michael's words: that we be overwhelmed with the experience of the love of God, even to tears.

We touch the door of the house from which he set out seeking his blessing on our journey.

Our prayer for each day follows Ignatius Loyola's suggestion that each day be dedicated to the service of God: "Lord, may I live for you and not for myself. Let everything I do be solely for your service and praise and not for my self interest." We seek this daily grace as we contemplate and be grateful for the beauty experienced in nature on our first day of pilgrimage and in our companions whose GIFTEDNESS we are coming to appreciate.

Such is the ground of our whole being, our whole identity: to know ourselves as loved unconditionally by our God. Such thoughts will percolate within us as we walk today through exquisite lay beautiful Basque countryside.

Coping with nature's call is one of the challenges of the Camino!

Zumarraga = destination Day 1
