Day 25, Wednesday 25th September. Rest Day (Lleida)

Set on the river Segre, Lleida is an important regional centre within the region of Cataluña and famous for its agricultural produce and textile industry. Of Iberian origins, the city (which was well known to the Romans who baptized it Ilerda) was under Muslim rule for four centuries. It was later conquered by Count Ramon Berenguer in the middle of the twelfth century.

After our long and exhausting day yesterday, we enjoyed a relaxing day exploring the ancient walled city, towering above the modern and vibrant modern city.

The forecourt of the ancient cathedral dating back to the 12C.

The interior of the cathedral, not in use as a worship centre, having been used as a military barracks among other things over the centuries. A new cathedral is now in the city below.
