Friday 20 September 2013

Day 20, Friday 20th September. Fuentes de Ebro - Venta de Santa Lucia. (29kms)

The early morning moon: last night we celebrated with Tracy from Hong Kong, the only non- Australian in our pilgrimage, the feast of the full moon. She had brought with her the traditional festival cake of which we all shared a little.

On the road in the early morn, with the story of the rich young man as our scripture for the day. "I have kept all the commandments, what more need I do? Go sell what you own, give the money to the poor and come follow me. The young man went away sad for he was very rich."

What is it I need to give away, let go of to be really free? A challeging thought for the day!

We meet many pilgrims going the other direction towards Santiago de Compestella. This 76yo Frenchman has walked to Santiago on different routes 9 times!

We walk by the train line: Spanish trains are ubiquitous, frequent and fast!

We say farewell to the River Ebro after weeks of being companions.

Refreshments in the Plaza of the village of Pina de Ebro.

Amanda is glad of the break before entering the desert.

On leaving the village the school children are on their break.

We celebrate cracking the 400km mark!

Into the desert in the heat of the day.

Tracy comes prepared!

Lunch in the only shade to be found in 20 km!

On and on we travel: reminiscent of the Israelites desert experience!

A shepherd's hut with our orange arrow marking the way, with the yellow being the Santiago camino.

Our destination is the roadhouse on the highway where the bus meets us, but not before a beer to celebrate a long, hard day.
