Day 14. Saturday, Sept 14: Alfara - Tudela (25 kms)

Today we are meditating on the nativity as we journey together. See what happens inside as we contemplate this world changing birth. Where am I in the picture?

Jesus was born after a long, exhausting journey to complete the census, in an obscure cave, maybe smelly and dirty, his parents feeling vulnerable and displaced for the birth of their firstborn.

Nearly every church has a storks nest atop: is that symbolic? The stork brings the new baby, new life - hopefully?
The Prince of Peace is born among us not as we might have imagined. As pilgrim-travelers we feel some of the travails and uncertainties of the pilgrim child. We soak up the love of God shown in and through his parents, which same love is accorded us.

As is our custom most mornings, we pass by the local cathedral or parish church.

Most of the day we follow the railway line, in the midst of rich, fertile fields.

Wineries dot the way, and we feel obliged to support the local industry!

Water abounds from channels from the Ebro river which we continue to follow: corn, almonds, and lucerne abound today, along with many other vegetables and fruits in this Spanish food bowl. It reminds me of the Murray River food bowl.

Mostly a flat walk these days, but still a few hills!

Acres and acres of almond trees.

It's been a hot day, 29C. Finding a shady spot for lunch was a challenge as the road was dry and dusty with little shade to be found. Boots and socks off to air the hot, sweaty feet with some foot repairs to be made!

We came across a large tomato growing operation: hundreds of acres being mechanically harvested.

The Ebro River is our constant companion reminding us of water as the source of all life: "I am the living water. those who drink of this water will never thirst."

Lucerne in abundance!

It takes all types: Vin & Sandra were always a bit different!

Danni is glad to be at the end of the day's pilgrimage as we enter Tudela.

The Christ statue overlooks the town: some were embarking on their way there to pray, as we arrived in town.

Nearly there, not sure if they can make it!

Spain has captivating popular art on the buildings - this is enormous!

We made it!
